Transitional flow in intracranial aneurysms - a space and time refinement study below the Kolmogorov scales using Lattice Boltzmann Method

چکیده
Most Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies of hemodynamics in intracranial aneurysms are based on the assumption of laminar flow due to a relatively low (below 500) parent artery Reynolds number. A few studies have recently demonstrated the occurrence of transitional flow in aneurysms, but these studies employed special finite element schemes tailored to capture transitional nature of flow. In this study we investigate the occurrence of transition using a standard Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The LBM is used because of its computational efficiency, which in the present study allowed us to perform simulations at a higher resolution than has been done in the context of aneurysms before. The high space-time resolutions of 8μm and 0.11μs resulted in nearly 1 × 109 cells and 9 × 106 time steps per second and allowed us to quantify the turbulent kinetic energy at resolutions below the Kolmogorov scales. We perform an in-depth space and time refinement study on 2 aneurysms; one was previously reported laminar, while the other was reported transitional. Furthermore, we investigate the critical Reynolds number at which the flow transitions in aneurysms under time constant inflow conditions. keywords— intracranial aneurysm; Lattice Boltzmann Method; convergence; transitional flow

متن کاملSimulation of Micro-Channel and Micro-Orifice Flow Using Lattice Boltzmann Method with Langmuir Slip Model
Because of its kinetic nature and computational advantages, the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been well accepted as a useful tool to simulate micro-scale flows. The slip boundary model plays a crucial role in the accuracy of solutions for micro-channel flow simulations. The most used slip boundary condition is the Maxwell slip model. The results of Maxwell slip model are affected by the ac...
متن کاملUsing Lattice Boltzmann Method to Investigate the Effects of Porous Media on Heat Transfer from Solid Block inside a Channel
A numerical investigation of forced convection in a channel with hot solid block inside a square porous block mounted on a bottom wall was carried out. The lattice Boltzmann method was applied for numerical simulations. The fluid flow in the porous media was simulated by Brinkman-Forchheimer model. The effects of parameters such as porosity and thermal conductivity ratio over flow pattern and t...
متن کاملNumerical analysis of gas flows in a microchannel using the Cascaded Lattice Boltzmann Method with varying Bosanquet parameter
Abstract. In this paper, a Cascaded Lattice Boltzmann Method with second order slip boundary conditions is developed to study gas flows in a microchannel in the slip and transition flow regimes with a wide range of Knudsen numbers. For the first time the effect of wall confinement is considered on the effective mean free path of the gas molecules using a function with nonconstant Bosanquet para...
متن کاملDirect numerical simulation of transitional pulsatile stenotic flow using Lattice Boltzmann Method
The present contribution reports direct numerical simulations of pulsatile flow through a 75% eccentric stenosis using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). The stenosis was previously studied by Varghese, Frankel, and Fischer 1 in a benchmark computation, and the goal of this work is to evaluate the LBM and the solver Musubi for transitional flows in anatomically realistic geometries. A part of ...
